Overwater villas are the dream. You step from your deck straight into the lagoon.

But they are not always the best choice. Beach villas have their own charms. Which should you book? It depends on what you want from your stay.

What is an overwater villa?

It is a villa built on stilts above the water. You get a private deck, often with steps into the sea. Floor panels or glass tables let you watch fish below.

The views stretch to the horizon. At night you can hear the water lapping.

What is a beach villa?

A beach villa sits on the sand, often with a private garden and plunge pool. You walk out onto the beach itself.

It feels grounded and natural. Usually it has more space for the price.

Overwater villa: the pros

  • The view. Open water on all sides.
  • Privacy. Villas sit apart from each other.
  • Direct swimming. Many have a ladder into the lagoon.
  • The wow factor. It is a bucket-list room.

Overwater villa: the cons

  • Cost. Usually the higher price category.
  • Walkways. Long distance to the main areas, sometimes with buggy rides.
  • Less outdoor space. No garden or sand.
  • Sea conditions. Waves or wind can sometimes be noisy.
  • Children. Deck gaps and open water can be unsuitable for young children.

Beach villa: the pros

  • Space. Often larger rooms and private gardens.
  • Value. Frequently cheaper than overwater rooms.
  • Easy access. Walk straight to the beach, restaurants and spa.
  • Sunsets and sunrises. Choose the side you want.
  • Family friendly. Easier with small children.

Beach villa: the cons

  • Less of the iconic view. You trade the stilts for the shore.
  • Neighbours. Some beach villas are closer together.
  • Tides. Depending on the island, some beaches change with the tide.

How to choose

Ask yourselves a few things.

  1. Is the overwater experience a must-have, or a nice-to-have?
  2. What is the budget? See how much a honeymoon costs.
  3. How many nights will you stay? Splurge on the best room for a short trip.
  4. How much do you want to snorkel from your room?
  5. Are you travelling with children?

A smart compromise

Split your stay. Spend a few nights in an overwater villa, then move to a beach villa. You get the experience and keep the cost down.

Some resorts offer this, so ask.

Rachel’s Tip

Look at the house reef position. A villa near good snorkelling can make a bigger difference than a fancier room.

Where to go

Overwater villas are famous in the Maldives, but you will find them elsewhere too. Our Maldives holiday guide explains seasons and resorts. For other choices, see the best honeymoon destinations by season.
