Part of our UK Breaks series. Start with the pillar guide: How to Plan a UK Weekend Break.
Autumn is my favourite season for a UK break. The summer crowds have gone home, the light turns golden by mid-afternoon, and the countryside puts on its best display of the year. Prices often ease after the school holidays too, and the places that were fully booked in August suddenly have room again. If you have been waiting for the right moment to get away, this is it.
Here are the autumn breaks I recommend most often, along with a few tips to help you make the most of the shorter days.
The Lake District: Autumn Colour and Cosy Evenings
Few places in the UK do autumn quite like the Lake District. The bracken on the fells turns a deep copper, the woodland around the lakes glows with reds and golds, and mist sitting on the water in the early morning is worth setting an alarm for. Days can be spent on gentle lakeside walks or on a boat across Windermere or Ullswater, with evenings by the fire in a traditional inn.
Rachel’s Tip: Base yourself in one of the quieter northern valleys rather than the busiest towns in the south. You will be closer to the open fells and further from the traffic.
The Scottish Highlands: Big Skies and Wild Landscapes
Perthshire is known as Big Tree Country for good reason, and in October its forests are spectacular. Further north, autumn brings the red deer rut, when stags can be heard roaring across the glens, an unforgettable sound if you are lucky enough to hear it. Pair a few days of walking or wildlife watching with a whisky distillery visit and a long, unhurried dinner.
Rachel’s Tip: Daylight is shorter the further north you go, so plan your main outdoor activity for the morning and keep the late afternoon free for something indoors.
The Cotswolds: Golden Stone and Golden Leaves
The honey-coloured villages of the Cotswolds look their best against autumn foliage. It is the perfect choice for a slower, more indulgent weekend: country walks between villages, a long pub lunch, antique shops and farm shops, and a good hotel to return to. Westonbirt, the National Arboretum, on the edge of the Cotswolds, is one of the best places in the country to see autumn colour.
Rachel’s Tip: Visit the arboretum on a weekday morning if you can. The colours are just as spectacular, and you will have the paths largely to yourself.
Northumberland: Castles, Coast and Dark Skies
Northumberland is one of the UK’s most underrated destinations, and autumn suits it perfectly. Its long, empty beaches and dramatic castles are wonderfully atmospheric under an autumn sky, and as the nights draw in, its dark skies come into their own. Northumberland is home to one of the largest areas of protected dark sky in Europe, making it a superb place for stargazing on a clear night.
Rachel’s Tip: Pack a warm layer and a flask for an evening under the stars. A clear, moonless night away from any towns is when the sky is at its best.
The Cornish and Devon Coast: Quieter Beaches and Seasonal Food
The South West is a different place once the summer season ends. The beaches and coast paths are calmer, the sea is still relatively warm in early autumn, and local restaurants make the most of seasonal seafood and produce. It is ideal for anyone who wants the coast without the crowds, with bracing clifftop walks by day and excellent food by night.
Rachel’s Tip: Check opening times before you travel. Some smaller cafés and attractions reduce their hours after October half term, so a little planning avoids disappointment.
How to Make the Most of an Autumn Break
Autumn travel rewards a little flexibility. The weather can change quickly, so choose a destination with good options for both fine and wet days, and pack layers and waterproofs rather than relying on the forecast. Book accommodation with a real sense of comfort, a fireplace, a good restaurant or a spa, because you will likely spend more time indoors than on a summer trip, and that should feel like part of the pleasure rather than a compromise.
